We manage WireGuard tunnels as close to the kernel as possible. To manage IP addresses, public keys, and mappings, our system uses the wgctrl-go library which talks directly to the Linux WireGuard module via the kernel's netlink facility.
When our customers try to connect to our WireGuard service, our app generates a new private/public key pair. The app issues a connection request to our RESTful WireGuard service.
The connection request includes only the public part of the keypair. Once the request is authenticated, our system generates an additional shared key, random local IP address for the customer and installs the WireGuard peer by communicating directly with the WireGuard module in the kernel.
